Phiota Receives National Mid-Level Student Affairs Professional Award

Dr. Juan R. "Varadero” Guardia, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago is the recipient of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Mid-Level Student Affairs Professional Award. This award recognizes individuals with a minimum of five years experience who demonstrate outstanding commitment to the student affairs profession and who have contributed to programs that address the needs of students and are experienced in creating campus environments that promote student learning and personal development.

In 2012, Guardia also received the NASPA Region III James E. Scott Outstanding Mid-Level Student Affairs Professional Award. NASPA Region III consists of the following states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

Dean Scott was Dean of Students and later Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Florida. He was widely known for his down-to-earth personality and ability to work easily with professional colleagues and students alike. He had a strong commitment to staff development and professional growth. This award is presented to mid-level student affairs professionals that demonstrate the personal and professional
qualities that characterized Dr. James E. Scott.
