Chapter helps build school in Latin America

New York, New York – September 2013

In the summer of 2007, the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity Inc. at St. Johns University was presented with an opportunity to change the lives of hundreds of students in Santa Eulalia, Peru. There was an initiative in the Jorge Guevara Mellado School to construct a new building that would provide a safer and more adequate space for the students to study. Waldo Guevara, member of the Alpha Gamma Chapter, saw the conditions of the current school and decided to help fund the new school building with the help of his fraternity. Within only a few months of fundraising, the money was sent.

The following year, the Mayor of Santa Eulalia came to New York to thank the fraternity for their help as well as give speeches at St. Johns University and New York University. Although it took several years of work and planning, the construction has finally been completed and the students begin attending the new school on August 19, 2013. To celebrate the completion of the school, members of the fraternity have gotten together and bought book bags for every student that will attend the school. A plaque has been made and will be placed in the wall of the school honoring all those people who made this dream possible including our fraternity. We are very happy with the completion of the school and are excited for the students to begin their classes.

Phi Iota Alpha is the oldest existing Latin American Fraternity; we strive each day to become professionals and help others do the same. In this instance we were lucky enough to improve the education of not only the current students of the Jorge Guevara Mellado School, but also the many more who will.

Since 1931, Phi Iota Alpha has set precedents for Latino Greek leadership in the global community. For over 80 years, Phi Iota Alpha has cultivated and inspired Latino men nationwide to become leaders of their communities across Latin America and the United States.
