Western Province of Phi Iota Alpha
Celebrates 15 Years of History
Lynwood, California - June 1, 2015
Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the Oldest Latino Fraternity in Existence, descends from the first Latino fraternity in the United States, Phi Lambda Alpha, which was established at the University of California, Berkeley in 1916. With deep ties to the Western Province, Phi Iota Alpha was formally established in 1939 at the University of Southern California. After a period of inactivity, FIA re-emerged on the west coast at California State University, Dominguez Hills, where four individuals lighted the spirit of FIA in the spring of 2000. Today, we celebrate 15 years of continuous efforts that continue to spread the light of Phi Iota Alpha throughout the Western Province.
In celebration of 15 years of rich history and empowerment of our Latino community, over 150 attendees representing all the chapters and colonies of FIA in the state of California, the Western Province of Phi Iota Alpha came together on May 30th in Lynwood, California. Brothers from throughout the United States also joined this important celebration, as everyone shared their stories of Phiota history.
The keynote speaker of the night, Bro. Jose Luis “Politico” Solache, the current mayor of Lynwood, shared inspirational anecdotes with new and old brothers alike. He reminded everyone of our brotherhood's strong commitment to empower the Latino community and challenged all brothers to not forget their pledge to the fraternity and to our fellow Latinos.
The formal banquet was followed by a celebration where brothers, family, partners, and friends enjoyed the night with música Latina and lots of dancing. The celebration of our values and the impact that FIA has had on the west coast continued to light as the centerpiece of the night. Looking to the future, we can expect many more years of rich history from our brothers in the Western Province, leaders who continue to impact their neighborhoods by helping every Latino reach his/her full potential.
Congratulations to the Western Province for
15 years of Phiota History and Success!
We wish you many more!
