Highlights from the 83rd National Convention of Phi Iota Alpha

Chicago, Illinois – July 2015

Phi Iota Alpha celebrated its 83rd National Convention in Chicago, Illinois on July 22-26, 2015.

This year, the Sheraton Chicago O’Hare Airport Hotel hosted Brothers and their guests from all across the United States. The annual convention provided an opportunity for undergraduates and alumni of various induction classes to connect with fellow Brothers and reconnect with the Fraternity.

On Saturday, the 99th floor of the Willis Tower served as the perfect venue for the Awards Banquet, where we honored the achievements of our undergraduates, alumni, chapters, and colonies. This year, we were honored to have Mr. Fernando Grillo as our Convention Keynote Speaker. Mr. Grillo serves as the Vice Chair of ASPIRA in Illinois and is very active in the Latino community supporting the education of Latino students in many cities across the nation.

Phi Iota Alpha extends their congratulations to this year’s award recipients:

  • Undergraduate of the Year: Tomas Uriostegui, NEIU Colony

  • Alumni of the Year: Steven Andrade, Alpha Omicron Chapter, Texas State University)

  • Management Team Member of the Year: Christian Alequin, IT Manager (Lewis University)

  • Philanthropic Excellence Chapter of the Year: Alpha Psi Chapter, Rutgers University

  • Chapter of the Year: Alpha Tau Chapter, UCSB

In addition, one colony was chartered as a new Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha:

  • Beta Nu Chapter: Western Michigan University

Three major announcements  were also made by the Board of Trustees of Phi Iota Alpha at this historical convention:

  1. Phi Iota Alpha has raised over $58,000 for UNICEF since our partnership in 2010.

  2. A transition to a biennial model for the National Convention was approved. The next National Convention of Phi Iota Alpha will be held in Washington, D.C. in 2017.

  3. It was approved for a committee of Brothers to move forward with an international expansion of Phi Iota Alpha into Panama. The results of this expansion will be used as a model to continue growing into other countries where interest has been expressed.

The 83rd National Convention of Phi Iota Alpha provided a great opportunity for all Brothers to celebrate our great values and fraternal organization. It was with great joy that innovative and forward thinking decisions were made by the Board of Trustees and the achievements of our Brothers were celebrated. We extend our gratitude to the sponsors and Convention Planning Committee that made this Convention possible.

The National Management Team of Phi Iota Alpha looks forward to receiving Brothers and friends in Washington, D.C. in 2017.
