Statement on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

New York, New York - September 5, 2017

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was a beacon of hope since its implementation on June of 2012. DACA has played an important role in the countless of undocumented individuals who, in an amazing display of courage, emerged from the shadows. It was an exceptional display of the constitutional principles to pursue happiness and opportunity that the United States of America was founded upon.

As the political discourse on the topic continues, we wanted to reach out today with a message of support for all of our brothers impacted by this announcement. Brotherhood in Phi Iota Alpha is based on a lifelong commitment to our shared values, not on a person’s national origin or immigration status.

Today, Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc., stands in solidarity with all of our brothers, friends, family, and allies as this very policy is rescinded. For a majority of undocumented individuals, living in fear and reprisal is not living at all. The same basic liberties that are taken for granted by the general populace are not afforded to those who are undocumented.

We will continue to be a source of empowerment to all who are affected by the rescinding of DACA today. At these times it is easy to focus our attention on DACA recipients, but we must not forget the millions of undocumented individuals in this country whom this decision also impacts. We must not forget the Dream of our peers who equally contribute to our nation, and their desire to call the United States home, for it is the only home they know.

If you were personally impacted by today's events, do not feel alone. Reach out to your allies, family, friends, and support groups because together, we will not be divided. Do not forget about the mental toll this can have on you, and look for help when you need it, for your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

Make sure to follow organizations that are providing help, ways to take action and valuable resources, such as American Civil Liberties Union, Define American, Here to Stay, Informed Immigrant, and United We Dream.

Keep in mind the following, put together by United We Dream:

  1. Your DACA is valid until its expiration date. To determine when your DACA and work permit expires, look at your I-795 Approval Notice and the bottom of your Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
  2. No new DACA applications will be accepted.
  3. DACA issuances and work permits expiring between now and March 5th, 2018 must be submitted for renewal by October 5th, 2017.
  4. Advance parole to travel abroad is no longer available.
  5. We are united in this fight. You are not alone.

Together we can be a strong collective voice to #DefendDACA and empower one another to support our undocumented young people and keep our families together for a better America.

In Unity,

Francisco M. Lugo, M.Ed.
