Phiota wins St. John’s Fraternity Man & Fraternity of the Year
New York City, New York - April 2010 At the St. John’s Greek Life Awards night, Brother
Jorge "Mesiah” Santos, (pictured right) President of the Alpha Gamma Chapter and Vice President
of A.L.F.S.A. received Fraternity Man of the Year and President of the Year.
The Alpha Gamma Chapter also took home Fraternity of the Year. As president of the Alpha Gamma
chapter, Santos has challenged each of the members to strive for perfection and
excellence and under his leadership they have prevailed. Becoming a 5 star
organization the highest recognition from St. Johns, Santos believes that we
are not a fraternity, however a movement with the power to impact the collegial
community. He has does this by sparking the minds of individuals with
educational events, controversial events, and fun events that give the
attendees a sense of what is truly is to be a college student.
Jorge Santos began the 2009
semester with a positive attitude. He implanted rules and regulations that would
enhance the performance of the chapter. He challenged each member to obtain
higher than a 3.0 GPA for the year, do over 20 hours of community service per
member, reaching the community and raising funds though campus parties that
would touch many. Every leader must lead by example and this is what Santos
did. For the Spring semester of 2009 he obtained a 4.0 for the semester and for
the Fall of 2009 he received a 3.4. He continues to push himself in his studies
through his final semester and plans on receiving Masters Degree in Criminology
at St. Johns.
Santos has been accepted into the
Honor Societies of Gamma Sigma Alpha and the Leadership Honor Society of Omicron
Delta Kappa, and the Greek Honor Society of Order of Omega. He is a leader with
the heart to save the world, one of his famous sayings are, "if I can spark a
change in one persons heart to better society then perhaps that person is the
one who can change the world if it isn’t me”.
During the fall semester Santos has
contributed with so many ideas to help his community. During the Holidays the
Alpha Gamma chapter raise a little over $1,670 donating it to St. John’s Bread
and Life. Jorge came up with the idea to have a campus party bringing DJs of
NY’s top radio station Hot 97, and asking Rev. James Maher, St. John’s Vice
President of Student Affairs, to choose a philanthropy which the proceeds were
donated to. The contribution
allowed us to sponsor seventeen families over the holiday break.
Jorge Santos has also received the
A.L.F.S.A. Most Valuable Person Award for contributing and reshaping the ALFSA
council which holds 6 Latino and 6 African American Fraternities and
Sororities. He received this award for his works as Vice President and the
legacy he leaves on to future ALFSA members. He has also received high
recognition from St. John’s Vice President of Student Affairs, Rev. James Maher
for his hard work and dedication as a student leader at St. John’s winning the
Campus Activities GOLD Award.
