Phiota Gamma Chapter wins Fraternity of the Year
On Wednesday April 28th at
the Student Club and Leadership award ceremony, The Gamma Chapter of Phi Iota
Alpha Fraternity INC was awarded: Fraternity of the Year, Community Service
Leader of the Year, & Program of the Year. Diones Adorno the vice president
and public relations for the chapter was awarded Fraternity Leader of the Year
and the Chapter Advisor Michelle Quock received the award for Advisor of the
Year.
The Chapter was recognized
because of all of its hard work, dedication, community services and programs that
not only raised awards of many topics but also left the New Paltz community
learning something new. Community Service has always been a very important part
of Phi Iota Alpha and at New Paltz they take very seriously. Every semester
since Fall 08 they have been door knocking and collecting donations for the
family of New Paltz. The workers at Family of New Paltz always look forward to
the end of the semester because they know the Gamma Chapter brothers will be
donating clothing, food and toiletries. This semester brothers conducted their
first every community service Phiota Week were they did a variety of events and
programs including, sexual awareness events, domestic violence program just to
name a few events that occurred that week. Last year during Phiota Week also
the Dons did a build a bear program where they were able to give out thirty
build a bears for free to the New Paltz community, The turn out was huge and we
were able to make many people happy with the bears and we’re also able to bring
the community together through this program by the students making bears and
getting to know one another on a personal level. This is the reason The Gamma
Chapter was awarded Community Service Leader of the Year.
Programming has also a valid part of
the role the Gamma Chapter plays in New Paltz. Last Semester they teamed up
with Alpha Nu Chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority INC. and the Kappa Mu
Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity INC. to discuss the very sensitive issue
of diversity on our campus. By uniting three very culturally different organizations
we sparked a discussion as to why it that the majority of Latinos and blacks
only attend black is and Latino programming and events and why a majority of
whites only attend programs done by whites. The turnout for the program was a
very diverse outcome which helped us all discuss what made us not support one
another at programs and how to better overcome the issues of diversity. This
program was also awarded Program of the Year, because of it’s approach to
tackle a every sensitive issue and being able to spark a discussion that people
still talk about today. ###
