Phiotas bring hope to Joplin

Joplin, Missouri - June 2011

Volunteer Phiotas from the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha at the University of Arkansas came to Joplin Missouri to help in the cleanup of the worst US tornado disaster in 63 years.

On May 22 en EF5 category tornado flattened the historic town of Joplin. The tornado killed more than 520 people and destroyed a thirteen mile swath of the city. In total almost one quarter of the city was destroyed.

"It's so sad to see all the people that were affected by the tornado," said Bro. Jorge Andrade. "All they have now is their memories. No House. No Car. For many everything is gone."

"With Joplin being so close to home, seeing people mobilizing, donations was not enough. We felt the urge to be present," said Phiota Director of Membership Services Rafael "Santoyo" Arciga Garcia. "Once we got to Joplin we were speechless to see the magnitude of the destruction."

For those interested in going to Joplin and helping in the recovery efforts you must register at Missouri Southern State University. Take I-540 until you come to Newman exit, it will take you straight to  Missouri Southern State. Shuttles are taking volunteers to the Joplin disaster area.
