The roots of Phi Iota Alpha were implanted at RPI. In 1898, when group of Latin American students organized the secret society Union Hispano Americana (UHA). The UHA was the first association of Latin American students founded in the US.
Established March 12, 1912 was the first Latin American based fraternity in the US. On December 26, 1931 Sigma Iota Fraternity merged with Phi Lambda Alpha Fraternity to form Phi Iota Alpha.
Phi Lambda Alpha fraternity was established in the year 1898, as a club under the name Union Hispano Americana. In 1921 it was changed to a Greek Letter fraternity. On December 26, 1931 Phi Lambda Alpha Fraternity merged with Sigma Iota Fraternity to form Phi Iota Alpha.
